A practical guide to the effective use of assessment centre technology - Free Seminars

This free short seminar is aimed at helping practitioners to use elements of assessment centre technology. There are some clearly laid down standards for assessment centres, but there is also scope for using parts of the range of methods represented by the assessment centre approach. In the seminar we will consider how to tread a path between letting the pursuit of perfection become the enemy of the good versus the unacceptable dilution of assessment centre standards.

Practical constraints on the application of very best practice within each of the areas of assessment centres, from job analysis to multiple competencies and multiple assessors will be explored. Other issues addressed will include the use of criterion-based interviews and standard psychometrics to complement job simulation exercises- the staple fare of assessment centres - and the role of participant report forms in providing further insights into behaviour. We will also look at who should function as assessors. Should they be line managers two levels up from the candidates, as is traditional, or HR staff or external consultants?

The pros and cons of using off-the-shelf versus bespoke job simulation exercises will be examined, together with issues stemming from clients’ emphasis on the credibility of exercise content. The scope for using less commonly employed processes, such as fact-finding exercises and in-basket interviews will be examined. The implications of candidates’ preferences, such as senior level people not wanting to meet other candidates, will be examined.

To book this seminar on a mutually convenient date and to arrange for a member of our team to visit your offices, please contact Barnaby Lassen on 01865 402 900.

Managing Talent for Retention and Growth - Free Seminar

Recessionary pressures are forcing many organisations to cut staff numbers. At the same time these pressures provide opportunities – and some would say excuses- for disposing of the services of those who may have been seen for a while as not fitting in with an organisation’s future. However, the disruptive forces set loose by the active shedding of staff also mean that many of those whose services are still needed will seek employment elsewhere. Of these it is those who are the most talented who will commonly have the confidence to seek a move and who will most readily find they can do so. Add to this an environment of likely recruitment bans even for key posts and the result can be a vicious spiral.

In this free short seminar we look at the dynamics of these different forces and how they can be mastered. We examine the scope for creating a talent inventory to identify most clearly those who should go and those who should be retained. We go on to look at the incentives and support that can be applied to potential leavers and those who it is required to retain in order to dampen instabilities. We also look at the role of communications and the resulting perceptions of management and its intentions and the value of taking a pro-active approach to managing these, Ideas such as the anticipation of tipping points in levels of staff commitment are put forward.

Why Do Leaders Fail? - Free Seminar

In challenging economic times organisations look for many qualities. Prudence, vision, creativity and tight economic management amongst them. Most importantly, leadership - at all levels - is critical. Boards of directors and top management need to identify current and future leaders who can help secure the operation’s current viability, and help it grow and develop for the future.

Hogrefe & Bradenlaw offers a short seminar in which some of the myths and misapprehensions about ‘Leadership’ will be explored. What exactly Is leadership? Is it one definable quality or is it more of a process, akin to thinking?

Some of the standard theories on leadership will be briefly reviewed, together with some thoughts on the strengths and weaknesses of current concepts. We will hazard an answer to some key questions:

• What do good leaders actually do that makes them effective?
• Can leadership be learned/taught? Or are leaders born not made?
• Why do acknowledged leaders sometimes fail?
• Are the best leaders instinctive leaders?
• How do the most effective leaders resemble chameleons?
• How can you identify future leaders amongst those with little experience of leadership?

This short free seminar will last around thirty minutes, with around a further fifteen minutes for questions.

LJI Training Promotion

Leadership Judgement Indicator (LJI) - Training Now Only £450 + vat

Scenario based tests are starting to be recognised for the value that they bring to the selection and development process. Innovations in scenario based testing allow the testing of complex situations that reflect the richness of the challenges faced in organisations. As an innovator in test publishing Hogrefe has published the Leadership Judgement Indicator (LJI) since 2005.

The LJI is a scenario based judgement test which allows the assessment of a leader’s judgement and preferred styles when dealing with a range of decision making contexts. It benchmarks how accurately the leader can discern the most appropriate way of engaging with colleagues, as well as the leadership strategies that he or she is likely to employ. The use of this test is obvious at the individual level but its use in the organisational setting can elevate knowledge about the principle leadership style dictated by the cultural norm.

The LJI has been standardised against a norm group of 1345 individuals who have formal leadership responsibility vested in their position. Positions ranged from chief executive officer to first line management and includes but isn’t limited to the following range of job titles: Managing Director, Naval Officer, Operational Director, Cabinet Secretary, Retail Operations Director.

The appropriate scenario item responses are scored against the best reponse formulated from an evolved situational leadership model. Using the Vroom and Yetton model as a taxonomy for leadership style, individuals respond on the appropriateness of Directive, Consultative, Consensual or Delergative styles. Individual responses for each scenario are scored by measuring the relationship between the theoretical response and their own. This provides a rich source of data indicatinig sub-styles which unclude Task Orientation, Involvement Orientation, Power Orientation and Empowerment Orientation.

We are confident that certification in the use of the Leadership Judgement Indicator will allow you to differentiate the services you offer both in the selection and development arena.

Training locations include- Oxford, London, Exeter & Harrogate.

To secure your seat or to sample the LJI, please call 01865 402 900.

*Please note the LJI one day training course is only available to those with a BPS level A qualification.
** This training promotion is only available to BPS registered independent psychologists.

Leadership Judgement 'Culture In The Team Audits'.

Your management teams may be delivering the business strategy but the question is how effectively are they delivering it? How good are they at making judgements about which people to involve in which tasks in order to keep people on side and maximise results? How do they decide when to retain control and when to release or equalise it? How well do they judge when to direct and when to seek consensus; when to consult or when to delegate completely?

All too often, managers can get stuck in a ‘one-track approach’ to managing people; always adopting a particular style. This may be a reflection of the individual’s personality but it can arise from a strong culture in the organisation to do things a certain way.

For the organisation to develop, managers and leaders need to be able to:

Understand that no one leadership style will be effective all the time and all leadership styles are effective some of the time.

Have the ability to judge which style is appropriate based on the nature of the task and the characteristics of the people involved.

Feel comfortable to deploy each style effectively.

The LJI, based on a strong theoretical model coupled with years of practical implementation, enables organisations to highlight the strengths and blind spots in a particular team or a department or across the organisation in terms of Leadership Judgement.

The audit will identify balance or bias towards particular styles and accuracy or failure of judgement about when particular styles are more or less appropriate.

For more information on how the audit process would work, please contact Barnaby Lassen on 01865 402 900.

Quality of Life in Young Renal Patients

Does chronic renal failure affect quality of life in children and young people?

Quality of life is an important issue in assessing the impact of clinical treatment on children's lives. A recent study at the University of Nottingham used the Generic Children's Quality of Life Measure (GCQ) to audit quality of life in children with chronic renal disease.

The GCQ is a child-friendly self-report questionnaire based on constructs provided by children. It is based on discrepancy between the child's perceived self and the child's ideal self. British norms (6-14 years) are provided.

In this study, young renal patients (mean age 13.6 years) completed GCQ during routine appointments. Researchers compared quality of life in the sample with that in the general child population and looked for gender differences and differences arising from treatment modality (post-transplant, dialysis, chronic kidney failure). The study was authored by Hilary Maxwell and Dot MacKinlay (Dept. of Clinical Psychology & Neuropsychology) and Prof. Alan R Watson (Children & Young People's Kidney Unit).

Perhaps surprisingly, the renal sample reported higher quality of life than the general sample. The researchers identified areas for further study, and are looking for the participation of other paediatric renal centres. To read more about this study, please click here... (pdf)

The GCQ is published by Hogrefe Ltd.
